Introduction
Facebook Pixel - one of the most important tools for measuring and optimizing ads - is receiving its first major upgrade. The change will affect the way data about user behavior is collected and processed, with the goal of making advertisers' work easier and improving the accuracy of ad algorithms.
The new features will be introduced around May 20, and full rollout will be completed within a month.
How it all started
The first signs of change appeared when specialists noticed strange events in the Pixel Helper Check extension for Chrome. Clients reported anomalies in pixel performance that could not be explained by a configuration error. After a series of tests, it became clear that Facebook was conducting internal tests for a new feature.
A little later, additional automatic events appeared - a sign that Meta was preparing a serious update to its data collection system.
What the new upgrade is
Facebook officially confirmed that it is starting to collect additional information about website events, without the need to manually add code. In other words - the pixel will begin automatically reporting certain actions, which until now had to be configured manually.
The main goals of the change
- Better automation - reducing the need for manual configurations.
- More accurate targeting - more data about user actions and their context.
- Improved measurement - collecting microdata that will improve the quality of ad algorithms.
- More efficient ad delivery - thanks to a richer event base.
It is important to emphasize that manual adding of standard events remains necessary. The new automatic events do not replace the already familiar "Purchase", "Lead", "AddToCart" and others, but supplement them.
The new automatic events
After careful monitoring and testing, two new types of eventswere identified, which are added automatically by the pixel.
1. Microdata Event
This event collects the information available in the Open Graph microformats on the page. In this way, Facebook will be able to better understand the context of each action performed by the user.
What it includes:
- Data from the page's Open Graph tags (title, description, image, etc.)
- Metadata for the product, article, or service
- Context for the user action
Recommendation:
If you use WordPress, make sure you have an active plugin such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math, which correctly add Open Graph information. This way you will make the most of this new mechanism.
2. SubscribedButtonClick Event
This event is triggered every time a button is clicked on the site. The pixel automatically collects the button text and additional data such as ID, tag, or value.
Example:
- Clicking "Send", "Buy Now", or "Subscribe"
- Extracting the button text and its identifier
- Sending the information to the advertising platform for analysis
This way you will be able to track interactions that previously required manual event creation.
What are the advantages of the new system
- Less code and fewer errors. You do not need to add every button or form manually.
- More data about user behavior. Facebook will analyze clicks, interactions, and context.
- Better Custom Audiences. The new events allow for more precise audience creation based on real actions on the site.
- Smarter Lookalike audiences. The algorithm will recognize behavior patterns and use them to find similar users.
How to prepare
- Do not stop standard events. Continue using Purchase, Lead, InitiateCheckout, and others.
- Update your pixel. Check whether you are using the latest version and whether Pixel Helper shows any errors.
- Check the Open Graph meta information. This will improve the performance of Microdata Event.
- Monitor the reports. In Ads Manager and Events Manager you will start to see the new events that will be added automatically.
- Test Custom Audiences. Try building audiences based on the new data and compare the results with previous campaigns.
What lies ahead
The main unknown remains whether the new automatic events will be able to be used for campaign optimization (for example, for conversions). At the moment, it is clear that they will be available for analysis and audiences, but whether they will directly influence the ad delivery algorithm remains to be seen.
Meta plans to test the system gradually, and by the end of the rollout there will be full support for Event Setup Tool, so even without access to the site code you will be able to enable or disable the new events.
Conclusion
Facebook Pixel is entering a new era. Automation will save time, increase data accuracy, and make ad campaigns smarter.
But there is one important truth - no automation can replace strategic thinking. Manually added events, correctly selected audiences, and a well-built funnel remain crucial to the success of every ad.
